Sunlight and Acne

Many people believe that sunlight is bad for acne sufferers. Some believe that sunlight is actually good for treating acne. According to many skin experts, there is some truth to both. Sunlight can be both beneficial and harmful, particularly to acne-prone skin.

Sunlight is said to be able to destroy the organisms that cause acne. These organisms are known as P acnes, and when they are no longer present on the skin, there will be no more breakouts.

The skin will eventually be free of acne, leaving you with clear complexion. However, this is possibly the only benefit that sunlight may provide to acne-prone skin.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause more pimples and acne to appear. Sunlight is one of the many factors that causes production of sebum.

When skin produces excessive amount of sebum, dirt, dust and other air particles may stick onto the skin easily. These may lead to clogged pores, which is the perfect breeding ground for acne-causing organisms. This is also the cause of breakouts.

Furthermore, with sunlight comes heat, and heat causes sweating. Sweat contains salts, which causes it to irritate the skin when it comes in contact with acne. This may lead to more redness, irritation, itchiness, and inflammation. It can be very painful as well.

It is safe to conclude that sunlight brings more harm than good, especially to acne-prone skin. Therefore, acne sufferers should try to avoid the sun as much as possible.

Otherwise, if you cannot avoid going out in the sun, use sunscreen at all times. This is important, particularly in the summer when you are always in the water.

Go for non-comedogenic sunscreen products, as they do not block the pores on your skin. It lets your skin breathe and do not allow dirt or product build-up.
